Its not gonna work!

By Jim Williams

Editor's Note: We all have thoughts — some good - some bad, but nonetheless they are thoughts. Our thoughts should be reflected upon and dealt with biblically (Rom. 12:1-3; Gal. 6:3; Phil. 3:12-17; Phil. 4:8-9; 2 Pet. 3:1, etc.). ‘Just Thinkin Out Loud' (spelling of ‘thinkin'' is purposeful) is a series of thoughts that are being made public. You may or may not agree with all of the thoughts you read in this series, but it will help all of us to discuss them — out loud. The hope of the author and editors at IIIM is that this will assist all of us to begin personal reflection upon our own thoughts and compare them with God's perspective in Holy Scripture. Readers are encouraged to use small discussion groups and/or our RPM forum for any irenic discussion(s) of these specific thoughts and others they may bring about.
A poster I read during college had a message that has stayed with me since I first read it: The society that exalts philosophy as a high art, yet shuns plumbing as a humble practice will have neither good philosophy nor good plumbing. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.

The true merit of a command is its good effect. There are objective physical laws that bring about good results when obeyed, and sometimes tragic results when shirked. When we choose to follow the orders of a physical law we reap the good result of adherence. It means we have submitted to its authority, and have recognized its higher wisdom.

It is this authority and wisdom that are crucial to the obedience to spiritual laws. Disobedience to scriptural edict says that the disobedient person has the authority to judge the edict, and the wisdom to tell whether or not it is the best decision to obey it. Judging the law extends itself to judging the lawgiver, so the lawbreaker extols him or herself as a god in his or her own right. This is idolatry in its purest form. Idolatry is the same as the sin of witchcraft, it is written.

Get in the face of physical law and you may get away with it from time to time. Get in the face of the God of Spiritual Law, and you always pay for it. Its not gonna work!

Tell me what you think, I'm just thinkin out loud!
